About
Hi, my name is Abijith Kowligy. I’ve been a GNU/Linux User for the past ~ 2 and 7/12 years and I really love it. I’ve been a strong supporter of OSS and I use Ubuntu Dapper 6.06 LTS right now. I have experience in managing a Slackware Server. Slackware Linux is my favorite for Server and was my favorite for Desktop as well until I realized that I didn’t have time to manage dependencies by myself, so I switched to Gentoo and realized that I didn’t have time for managing Gentoo and didn’t have time for a program to compile so for the past few months, I’ve been using Ubuntu, and its been great.
Recently, I’ve been trying to advocate Novell SUSE Linux as well. So I’ve been listening to Novell Open Audio Podcast and i’ve gained a bit of knowledge. Its awesome to be honest. So advocate Novell.
Fedora Core is also one of the more polished Linux distributions: http://fedora.redhat.com
Some Open Source Applications:
Mozilla Firefox – an awesome Web Browser
GNOME Desktop Enviroment – A Professional Desktop Environment and one of my favorites. My description is too short to describe the awesome features of GNOME. Check out the latest GNOME features at http://www.gnome.org/start/2.14/
GNOME Projects - Various Projects that involve the GNOME Libraries and also use the GTK Toolkit. One of the better integrated browsers, Epiphany, is available here.
Xfce – Another Simple Desktop Environment that uses GTK Toolkit. It is a very nice desktop environment for lower-end machines, and even for higher end ones, if you like simplicity. I’ve been using Xfce ever since v.4.0.5 released and have never been disappointed by it. I would definitely recommend trying it.
http://www.kde.org – K Desktop Environment – A Complete Desktop Environment using the Qt toolkit. Much more complete in terms of Applications and much more customizable than GNOME [as per some]. Its great if you’re looking to start in Linux. GNOME is also simple but this looks much more familiar to Windows Users.
Banshee – My Favorite Audio Player. CVS Version supports Podcasting, Internet Radio, Music Recommendation, Music Sharing, and many more features.
Freshmeat has a lot more applications than I’ve listed and its rather awesome.
So, as you can see, I’m obsessed with Open Source and Linux.
I’m also very much interested in Mathematics and Physics. I am currently researching more on “Quantum Cryptography” to find advantages of using this sort of encryption. So I’ll be familiar with Quantum Computing by the end of the 2007 School year [So around June 2007] hopefully.
Later,
Anniyan.
