Stable Fedora Core 5 and Unstable Ubuntu Edgy
So, I’ve got a new 160G HDD that I’m playing around with. Since I’ve upgrade to Edgy on my Ubuntu Partition, I felt that I should have a stable rock-solid distribution that doesn’t have the potential to eat up my computer like Edgy does, or thats what they say. I had Dapper from Flight 3 and never had a problem but I have 160G extra space so I figured I’d install Fedora Core on it and am now using it as my stable distribution for all my work and using Ubuntu Edgy just to test stuff. So here’s a screenshot of me working on my Fedora Core 5 partition. It is very stable and has a faster GNOME startup time than Dapper did, which is good. I have not tried anything funky with it other than using the Utopia repo from http://people.freedesktop.org/~hughsient/ to upgrade the dbus-0.61 to dbus-0.62 so that I could compile Banshee CVS on it. Anyways, I am glad that some found my previous article helpful and I am also glad that some criticized it. Here’s the screeny:

yea it’s strange how GNOME works so much faster in Fedora than it did on Dapper in my box.
I’ve a question regarding Banshee’s Amarok-like reatures of related artists and stuff… Is that based on Last.fm? Also is that feature still in a dev/svn version or out in stable by default? I’m stupid when it comes to compiling stuff cuz I can’t solve dependencies on my own.
P.S. –> Great work on working out with SLAB on non-SUSE/SLED system. Would you be integrating it into ur FC too?
lol! u can ignore that, I’m just being greedy in there…
Yeah – I was surprised that GNOME was faster on Fedora. The Boot Up is almost the same between the two but heh.. yeah. Anyways, the Amarok-Like Features of Related Artists, yeah – thats based on Last.FM . I believe that this is only for CVS Version. You have to first install banshee from cvs, and then install banshee-official-plugins from SVN. Its listed on the site: http://www.banshee-project.org. What distro are you using? I could help you if you want to solve the dependencies, etc.
As for SLAB/SLED – I don’t know if I will do it in FC5 but there’s an RPM for it I believe at http://fullo.wordpress.com/2006/07/11/gnome-slab-for-fedora-core-5/
lol!! I kinda didn’t know how to come back here cuz I forgot to bookmark it, until I found the referrer link today at Blog Stats under Dashboard.
Umm… I’ve never tried CVS and SVN thingys… I just dunno how to use them cuz I’m non-technical to the boot — blame that ‘apt-get install’ thingy, hi. But hey hey… there’s always a first time, so gonna give it a go over the weekend. I primarily use PCLinuxOS and when I fancy GNOME boot back into FC. Oh and thankies for the FC 5 SLAB linky… rebooting to check it out!
